Coaching is a process of deceptive simplicity and power

Coaching is primarily about facilitating individuals to define and achieve their goals, or developing excellence in targeted areas – for some it can be truly transformational.

The coaching process ‘draws out’ (rather than ‘pours in’) ideas, skills and action plans, which are all the more powerful for coming from within. In addition, at appropriate times and with the client’s permission, Zoë will take on a mentor role, for example where she has relevant knowledge, or expertise the client does not possess.

Coaching enables clients to improve their confidence and self-awareness, spot unhelpful assumptions and break out of closed-loop thinking. Many clients find coaching provides them with new tools or approaches which they can use in a wide variety of situations, not just the one in hand.

The net result of coaching is fulfilling professional and personal growth.

The Coaching Process

At its simplest, coaching with Zoë follows a three-stage process:

  1. Raise awareness through questioning to clarify goals, challenge assumptions and spot self-limiting beliefs.
  2. Based on the understanding created in Stage 1, define an action plan.
  3. Support implementation and build on the learnings along the way.

In practice most coaching situations are complex, combining this three-stage process with a variety of coaching tools and concepts, for example: Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Transactional Analysis, Wheel of Life and Wheel of Management (see FAQs for information on these).

Typical Programme

Coaching often begins with a ‘chemistry meeting’ between the coach and client, to
help the client choose the right coach.

If a third party is involved, eg. HR or line manager, a three way meeting to agree coaching objectives, review processes etc. is also recommended. (N.B. The actual content of any coaching sessions will remain confidential, in line with the International Coach Federation code of ethics).

A first coaching session is face to face and usually lasts 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent coaching sessions can be via phone, or face to face and are between 30 to 90 minutes, taking place every 2 to 6 weeks, as agreed between client and coach.

Depending on the objectives agreed for coaching, it may take one session to achieve these, or it may take a number of sessions. it is hard to predict how many are required in any individual case, but often a rough idea can be given at the initial chemistry meeting. Typical assignments are between 3-10 sessions.

Creighton Coaching and Consulting does not believe in tying people into a specific number of coaching sessions in advance – it is up to the individual to decide if they are getting value from the coaching and whether they wish to proceed with further sessions.
